Super Fat

Superfating is the amount of oils that are left over after the lye has saponified (turned to soap) all the oils. For instance, if you wanted to superfat at 5%, you would figure out how much lye you would need to turn 95% of your oils into soap. This is the same as saying a lye discount.  Most people superfat at between 3 and 7 percent. We have a terrific blog post about supperfatting:
